Firecrackers shocked the peaceful town since the only child of Li family, Xingwang,  came back from foreign agriculture team. All relatives came to congratulate the widow, Wang Lan, and wife, Xique. The widow hugged the child with tears when Xing Wang came back home. Three years ago, the child was asked to work at foreign country and she had begged for blessing for her son. Now Xing Wang was back safely. Xing Wang was had mixed feeling when he looked at the wife who was crying happily and the big boy who was born when he just left, Li Mingde, walking around. The happiness of Xique was out of words. With the congratulations of other relatives, everybody was so happy at the dinner, except for the owner of grocery, Tian Feng. He smiled but he could not cover his disappointment. At night, Deng Cai invited Xing Wang to have a drink in a snack shop and then Xing Wang was drunk and fell into a ditch; finally, he was dead.

Wang Lan seldom went out since the death of her son and she focused on her grandson, Mingde. Tian Feng helped Xique when she was mocked and flattered by others. He even sent some daily supplies to Li family, but he was treated badly by Wang Lan. Wang Lan often cursed at Xique and stopped her to get close to her grandson. At one day, Xique fell down in a faint on her way home and doctor said that she had been pregnant for three months. Wang Lan hit Xique angrily since she doubted that there was affair between Tian Feng and Xique. Xique explained for many times in panic and she thought that it was the night that Xing Wang was back. However, Wang Lan did not believe in it and she insisted to have an abortion of such posthumous child but Xique did refuse and then she delivered a second boy, Li Mingren.
